Three mistakes that catch travellers out

1. It isn't 90 days a year.

It's 90 days in any 180-day period, checked on every day you're in the area. It never resets on 1 January.

2. Travel days count.

The day you arrive and the day you leave both count as days in the Schengen area.

3. Going home doesn't reset it.

A week back in the UK doesn't give you a fresh 90. Each day you used only drops out 180 days later.

Your trips

Enter each stay in the Schengen area — past trips, and (in the full planner) trips you're planning. Leave the exit date empty if you're there now.

How it works

  1. Add your trips. The dates you entered and left the Schengen area. Takes a minute; nothing is uploaded.
  2. See your status. Days used, days left, your last safe day and the earliest date you can come back — free.
  3. Plan the next one. Add trips you're thinking of booking. The planner shows if they break the rule, on which day, and the earliest date that works.

What the full planner adds

Your last safe day, for any date

“If I arrive on 3 March, how long can I stay?” One tap gives the number of days and the exact date you must leave, plus a calendar reminder.

When you can come back

“When can I come back for 30 days?” The planner finds the earliest arrival date that keeps every trip — past and planned — inside the rule.

Your 12-month plan

A year calendar that colours every day by how long you could stay if you arrived then — so you can see exactly when your days come back.

Your travel record

A one-page 90/180 Planning Report of your trips, days used and safe dates, to print or save as a PDF and keep with your travel documents. It's your own record, not an official document.

How we check the maths

Every result is worked out day by day: for each day, the planner counts the days you were in the area in that day and the 179 days before it, counting the days you arrive and leave.

  • Checked against 33 automated tests and 2,000 random travel plans, using a separate day-by-day count written independently.
  • Gave the same answers as the European Commission's short-stay calculator in 13 test cases, including leap years, New Year, overlapping trips and days dropping out of the 180-day window.

Checked 29 September 2026.

This is a planning tool, not legal advice. Border officials make the decision, and a residence permit, national visa or other arrangement can change what applies to you.

Questions

Is this official, or legal advice?

No. It's an independent planning tool and calculation aid that applies the 90/180 counting rule to the dates you enter. It isn't affiliated with the EU or the UK government. Border officials make the decision, and a residence permit, national visa or other arrangement can change what applies to you — check GOV.UK travel advice for the country you're visiting.

Why not use the free EU calculator?

The European Commission's free short-stay calculator is good for a one-off check. In planning mode it checks one arrival date against your past stays; it won't check a trip planned for after that date, and in our use it didn't keep trips between visits, so you type them in each time. The full planner keeps your trips on your device, checks all your planned trips together, shows a 12-month plan and produces a printable report. Both give the same day counts — see “How we check the maths”.

What about the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES)?

Since 12 October 2025 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has recorded non-EU travellers' entries and exits electronically. It doesn't change the 90/180 rule. The EU's EES online tool can show your remaining days using your passport details, but it does not count any stay that began before 10 April 2026, even if that stay continued after that date. The planner is for planning ahead: it checks trips you haven't taken yet.

What happens if I overstay?

GOV.UK warns that if you overstay the 90-day limit you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years (Spain and France travel advice, checked 29 September 2026). Always check the latest GOV.UK travel advice for the country you're visiting.

Where is my data stored?

Only in your browser on this device. We never receive your trips. Use the backup file to move them to another device.

Who is it for?

UK passport holders (or anyone allowed 90 days in 180 without a visa): second-home owners, long-stay holidaymakers, people visiting family, and anyone making repeated trips.
